Many of
the woodlands that were planted in
the 1970 and 80's resulted in huge
swathes of fast growing conifer
spreading over our countryside.
However changes made in 1988 to the
(generous) tax incentives, have
encouraged the planting of slower
growing broad leafed species, such as
oak, ash and beech trees. The
Forestry Authority has also released
parts of its forestry stock, in small
parcels, which are affordable by
people wishing to own land of their
own.
Woodland owners,
apart from enjoying their sporting
rights, may apply for a felling
licence which will allow them to fell
specified trees for sale. Under the
present tax regime owners pay no
income or capital gains tax on any
profits they make from selling
timber. Woodlands are also free of
inheritance tax, providing it has
been owned for more than 2 years.
If an owner
wishes to improve his woodland, then
a grant may be available from the
Forestry Authority or local
government for restocking, planting
and management.
We can assist by
offering a sporting land procurement
service covering the acquisition of
woodlands and arable land with
freehold sporting rights. We
regularly obtain details of land and
sporting which is being offered for
sale, and this information is
evaluated before being offered for
inspection by clients who have
registered their specific interest
with us.
The sporting
rights of game shooting, vermin
control and the deer stalking rights
can also be purchased outright or let
for seasonal periods by lease or
licence.
